Hello Neighbors!

There have been some questions regarding the two meetings tomorrow night,
and I thought I would a) remind you to bundle up and attend and b) let you
know what is going on at each one...
  _____

Meeting #1: Fleetwood Neighborhood Association General Meeting
Agenda: Upcoming Vote on EXCEL aid, otherwise known as
Proposition 1
                    Presenters: Mount Vernon School District
Representatives
                    Time: 7:30 pm
                    Place: Riverside Memorial Chapel

At this meeting, we will do our usual song and dance of the committee
updates, and then welcome Desiree Grand and others from the School District
as they discuss the upcoming vote on EXCEL aid.

Meeting #2: Elias Gootzeit's Meeting at City Hall - Identifying
Strategies to Address the Needs of our Fiscally Distressed School District
Agenda: Not sure, but it's a meeting with City
Administration, the Public, the School District Employees, etc.
                    Time: 7pm - 9pm
Place: City Hall, Council Chambers (2nd Floor)
Here is the text of Mr. Gootzeit's Invitation:
"I am sending this letter as an invitation to follow-up on the wonderful
LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST SUMMIT that was held on Monday, October 27, 2008
between state, county and city elected officials and the City of Mount
Vernon School Board Trustees and administration. As announced at that
breakfast, our next step is to convene a public meeting on January 15, 2009
at the City Council Chambers at Roosevelt Square in Mount Vernon between 7pm
and 9pm(sharp) to help identify a strategy that can address the needs of our
fiscally distressed School District.
We expect to have video coverage of the conversation before an invited
audience of individuals representing stakeholder groups within our
community. We are attempting to establish an understanding of how our School
District has gotten to this point, and how we as a community can provide
sufficient clout to find and support some immediate and long term solutions.
Please assist us by inviting movers and thinkers in our midst- accountants,
lawyers, religious leaders, and others whose interest in Mount Vernon and
its people would bring an important perspective to our deliberation
together. If this effort is successful, we would like to design an
implementable strategy, and discuss that strategy in this public forum. with
video capacity. that can thereafter be presented to the community-at-large.
We greatly appreciate the efforts of the City Council in helping to
facilitate and convene this important event to be hosted at City Hall. We
hope that all of our elected and school district officials will be in
attendance.

Please call me at 914-469-1672 to confirm your attendance and provide any
suggestions that you feel merit inclusion in our effort."

My Honest Opinion on which meeting to attend:

Honestly? I think that if you're going to make the effort to come out, and
can make it over there, the meeting at City Hall might be more productive.
I would like to be there myself, but obviously, can't make it. I will be
taking notes at the EXCEL meeting, however, and will disseminate the
information through this contact list after the meeting - so if you go to
Mr. Gootzeit's meeting, you can still get the information from ours.
Doesn't that sound like the best of both worlds?? Here's the kicker - if
anyone on this contact list attends the meeting, I would really appreciate
it if they, in turn, could take notes for me, so I can send the information
out...(Aye, there's the rub!)

Now, of course, if you don't attend this FNA meeting, you owe us two
meetings to make up for it...

The schedule for 2009 FNA General Meetings (subject to change) is:

January 15, 2009

March 19, 2009

May 21, 2009

July 16, 2009

September 16, 2009

November 19, 2009 (Board Elections)

All meetings are held at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, at 7:30 pm

Royal Treatment...Fleetwood Style

I would also like to make mention of a great opportunity to support the NY
Public Library Teen Programs, and exclaim over the artistic talents coming
from our very own neighborhood! Robert S., member of the FNA, founding
member of Fleetwood Pride, and the man who hangs the signs in the train
station for us, is an amazing artist, and recently designed a tiara for a
public auction, proceeds from which will go to the NY Public Library Teen
Programs. He was given the rare opportunity to participate in a special
promotional event for the tenth and final book in the Princess Diaries
series by author Meg Cabot. The promotional event consists of one-of-a-kind
tiaras created/designed/decorated by celebrities, authors and
designers.....everyone from Vera Wang to Bobby Brown to Austin
Scarlet....Robert S. created a USA WEEKEND Tiara. The Tiaras are being
auctioned off online (just went live) to raise money for essential teen
programs at the NY Public Library. To view site and Tiaras, go to the link
listed below. The USA WEEKEND Tiara is on the second page. (Tiaras are
listed alphabetically)

Congratulations Robert! I'm still waiting on the fitting for my tiara...

  _____

Acronyms...

Finally - the acronyms. A lovely member pointed out that without
explanation of acronyms, some very interesting words can be put together to
stand in their place. For example, the FNA could, in effect, change from
"fleetwood neighborhood association" to (and these are her words, not mine!)
"Fastidious Nubile Anglers"...so, to clear up any misunderstandings about
whether we board members can fish in a flexible and yet demanding
manner...here are the explanations for tonight's acronyms:

FNA - Always and Forever - Fleetwood Neighborhood Association

EXCEL - EXpanding our Children's Education and Learning

  _____

Membership

Yes - Memberships are due and payable this month! Just a reminder:

Individual: $25.00

Family: $40.00

Business: $50.00

and...you get a lovely FNA Go-Bag when you sign up! Who could ask for more?

Have a great day - and be careful out there!
